ACW Scenario

Here is an ACW scenario for a game that we recently played. I have lost the files for the battle report so you will have to try it for yourself in order to find out what happens!! As always, this scenario is intended for Guns at Gettysburg in 28mm.

Peeler’s Crossroads
Shenandoah Valley 1864
This fictional scenario is based on the Battle of Piedmont Virginia in June of 1864. The Federals, under “Black Dave” Hunter, were moving “up” the valley to drive the Confederates away from the passes that could connect it with Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia. Hunter hoped to pin, and destroy, the tattered army led by John Imboden. “Grumble” Jones was ordered to bring reinforcements to the area and take command of the Valley Army in an attempt to stall the Union advance. Finding much of the CSA’s Valley Army near Peeler’s Crossroads, Union brigades under Sullivan launch a determined attack…

Union Objectives:
1.       Destroy 2 CSA Brigades via unit rout, unit dispersal, or Brigade routing off table.
2.       Capture Peeler’s Crossroads.

Confederate Objectives:
1.       Destroy 2 USA Brigades via unit rout, unit dispersal, or Brigade routing off table.
2.       Maintain control of Peeler’s Crossroads.

Terrain Effects:
Woods – For sake of game play, all woods are considered light woods and are classed as DIFFICULT TERRAIN. Units in woods receive -2 Cover modifier when being fired upon.

Farms – The “field” part of the farms represents the farms in this game. The buildings are decorative and offer NO benefits. Any unit in the “field” receives a -1 Light Cover modifier to represent fences, farm buildings, and other “cover” in and around the farm.

Hills – These hills are more representative of rises in the terrain and do not cause movement penalty. The hills do block line of sight.

Ridge – The ridge area, in the NW corner of the table, is SEVERE TERRAIN.

Special Rules:
1.       We will use a modified version of the Divisional Redeployment March (rule 14.16) as our Tactical March. Any BRIGADE may move 24” provided that they remain more than 24” away from ANY enemy unit for the entire move. The Marching Brigade must have all of its units in March Columns and on MOVE orders.
2.       Skirmish lines MUST have a minimum of 3 inches between figure bases; otherwise it is counted as Extended Line. Exception: If a stand cannot sit on a terrain piece then it may be closer than 3 inches to an adjoining stand but it must be made clear of the intent. This rule is being enforced to maintain ground scale and spacing.

Fun facts…
Medal of Honor recipients at Piedmont

Private Thomas Evans, 54th Pennsylvania Infantry, shot a Confederate officer rallying the Confederates, battled the color bearer of the 45th Virginia and captured the flag from him.

Musician James Snedden, 54th Pennsylvania Infantry, picked up a rifle and joined the attack, captured Colonel Beuhring Jones, commander of the 1st Confederate infantry brigade.

Major General Julius Stahel, was struck by two bullets as he led his dismounted cavalry into the fight, had the wounds dressed at a field hospital and returned to direct the final cavalry charge.
